Elisabeth Dorothea was born in 1640 as the daughter of Ernest the Pious of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and his consort Elisabeth Sophia. She became a Landgravine through her marriage to Louis VI of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1666.

The blood line was inherited as far as Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt, later the Hereditary Princess of Baden, thanks to clever marriages.

Her daughter Karoline Fredericke Wilhelmine of Baden married Duke Maximilian Joseph of Palatinate-Zweibrücken and became the first Queen of Bavaria later. Her great-granddaughter was Elisabeth Amalie, the first Princess of Liechtenstein from Ernst the Pious’ blood line.

Elisabeth Amalie is the mother of Franz Joseph II and the grandmother of Hans Adam ll, today’s Prince of Liechtenstein.
