Leopold I, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and the first King of Belgium (brother of Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha). The Greek crown is supposed to have been awarded to him in 1830. He rejected it. Once Belgium had gained independence from the Netherlands, Leopold was the first King of Belgium between 1831 and 1865. His second marriage was to Princess Marie Louise of Orléans, the daughter of King Louis Philippe of France.

Charlotte, Leopold’s daughter, married Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico in 1857.

Belgium’s national holiday is incidentally 21 July. Leopold signed an oath on the Belgium constitution on this day in 1831.
