The Augustinian monastery and church

Gotha’s Augustinian monastery and church is over 700 years old and therefore the first one in Thuringia, even before the famous foundation of its subsidiary in Erfurt. The Gothic cloister dated 1366 still reminds us of the great era of the mendicant order today.

The church was rebuilt in Baroque style inside under Duke Frederick I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg between 1676 and 1680. Besides a memorial plague for Luther’s stay at the monastery as the district vicar you can also see the gravestone of Gotha’s reformer Friedrich Myconius. The site belongs to the Protestant city church community today and houses a meeting centre with café and hostel.
