As the name suggests, the Buttermarkt used to be a trading place for dairy products and meat. Today the small, gorgeous square is lined with cafés and bars residing behind colourful Baroque and Renaissance façades.

The “Gothaglüht” metal design meeting with international forging competition takes place here in the autumn.

The Kiss of Peace Throne in the middle of Buttermarkt was the result of an art project for the Thuringian Day in 2011. The backrest includes a free representation of the kiss of peace medallions at Friedenstein Castle, the post figures stand for the 4 Ernestine lines.
