Das Barocke Universum

Historical town hall

The red town hall is the unmissable heart of the Hauptmarkt and splits the inner city square into the Oberer and Unterer Hauptmarkt, formerly called Jacobsplatz.

The town hall was built as a solid emporium with shops on the ground floor in 1567 after the Grumbach Feud and was used by Duke Ernest the Pious as a residence while Friedenstein Palace was being built. Today the picturesque Renaissance building is the seat of the Lord Mayor and the registry office.

TIP! Climb up the town hall tower and enjoy the view over the city’s rooftops.
